Both platforms can run a serious store. The right choice depends on your team, your payment options and how much control you want, not on which is “better”.
| Factor | Shopify | WooCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| Setup speed | Fast, hosted for you | Slower, you choose hosting |
| Running cost | Monthly plan plus apps | Free plugin, but hosting and extensions cost money |
| Customisation | Good, within the platform’s limits | Almost unlimited |
| Maintenance | Handled by Shopify | Updates and security are your job |
Four questions to decide
- Which payment gateway do your customers use? Shopify Payments is not available in every country, and local gateways may need third-party apps or extra fees. Check this first, because it can decide the whole question.
- How many products do you have? Hundreds are comfortable on either. Very large or unusual catalogues often suit WooCommerce.
- Who will maintain the store? If nobody on your team wants to handle updates and backups, a hosted platform saves headaches.
- Do you already run a WordPress site? If so, WooCommerce keeps content and shop in one place.
Our rule of thumb
Choose Shopify when you want to launch quickly with little maintenance. Choose WooCommerce when you need unusual features, local payment plugins or full control of your data.
